Japan’s popular revolving sushi chain, Sushiro, is opening its first U.S. location this October in New York’s Times Square—right next to a McDonald's. Self-proclaimed as the "world's #1 sushi brand," the chain will retain signature features from Japan, such as touch-panel ordering systems.

However, the U.S. dining experience will lean noticeably upscale. While two pieces of tuna cost about 180 yen ($1.15) in Tokyo, the same plate will cost $5 in New York, with other plates priced at $6, $8, or $10. The restaurant will also feature private dining rooms on a separate level — a rarity for kaiten sushi in Japan — offering curated prix fixe menus rather than automated delivery belts.

The main dining area will offer around 200 menu items, including Americanized creations like double-cheese shrimp rolls and marinated salmon with cream cheese. Curiously, Sushiro is adopting the traditional Osaka phrase kuidaore ("eat 'til you drop") as its U.S. catchphrase.

In a welcome nod to Japanese customs, Sushiro will enforce a strict no-tipping policy, a move warmly received by local consumers facing tip fatigue.

Sushiro operates 659 locations in Japan. In total, its parent company (Food & Life Companies Ltd.) manages over 800 locations worldwide, including rapid expansion across markets like Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Mainland China, South Korea and now the U.S.
